John James reports: (i am using a mac) my particular problem was file object.d was not found when trying to compile my hello.d program. i followed the directions exactly as described on the installation portion of the site.

I'm not sure what instructions he read, but if it's this: http://dlang.org/dmd-osx.html Then it's missing the step of copying the druntime and phobos source code.
