recursive expansion ... The error message is minimalistic. Where does it take place? I would like to request a better error message which shows the original location of the error. Also, I would like to see the expansion itself, at least one hundred lines. And the stack. Thanks.

There's no test case, so this bug is invalid, but I believe this is fixed now anyway -- recursive expansions show an instantiation trace.
