We need this. If the only reason that it was deprecated is because it was unused, can it please be un-deprecated? I'd rather not compile with -d, as I'd prefer not to use deprecated stuff in general, additionally, I wouldn't want it to disappear one day :)

At least an explanation of why it's deprecated would be a start. The documentation comment doesn't address it at all.
